Rahu Jayanti Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi

Indian mythology describes the story of Rahu.  Swarabhanu is a demon who became into two pieces as Rahu and Ketu . Based on Skanda Purana, the Jalandhar king, the chief of Asuras with proud and bad intentions sent Rahu as an emissary to Lord Shiva to give the message that he is not a good companion to Mata Parvathi, because he doesn’t possess any Kingdom and stay in burial grounds. Rahu unaware of the powers of Lord Shiva informed the message to Lord Shiva. Out of anger, Lord Shiva opened his eyes and threw Rahu into a huge being (an illusion) and then Rahu became the Eighth planet among Navagraha. This incident took place at Barbara, therefore Rahu is called as Barbara Dutta.

The  Rahu apologized to Lord Shiva for his mistake, and then Lord Shiva told him to be one of the navagraha and created a time known as Rahu Kalam which is mostly followed in Tamilnadu. This time lasts for 90 minutes from morning 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. There is no Rahu Kalam before 6:00 AM or after 6:00 PM. The time differs from Sunday to Saturday.

Sunday  4:30 PM to 6:00 PM
Monday  7:30 AM to 9:00 AM
Tuesday  3:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Wednesday 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM
Thursday  1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
Friday  10:30 AM to 12:00 PM
Saturday  9:00 AM to 10.30 AM

Rahu kala is considered as bad time or an inauspicious time to do any good deeds or any favourable work. People are forbidden to do any important work. There are different types of Rahu as Mantra Rahu, Kanda Rahu, Vara Rahu, and Murat Rahu.  Rahu kaal is calculated by dividing the daytime 12 hours by 8, the 18th  part of the time.

The moral story in Kaliyuga is about the people who tried to take advantage of women in a financial crisis or in bad times or harass women for sexual pleasure such person's life is miserable on earth and they roam like a Rahu without any family or in heaven or hell. The Hindu texts like  Brahmapuran, Mahabharata, and Mahabhagavat clearly explain the existence of Rahu and Ketu.

At the time of churning kshetra Samudra by gods and Demons to obtain Amrita , the elixir of immortal life, the demons fought with the Gods to consume Amrita. Then the gods requested Lord Vishnu to resolve the dispute to distribute among them. Then Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini distributed Amrita among Gods and demons. Lord Vishnu first started distributing  Amrita to Devathas, and the demon Svarabhanu noticed and Sat with Devathas. Lord Vishnu has given the Amrita to demon Svarabhanu when he is about to swallow, the Lord Sun and Moon informed Lord Vishnu he is not Devatha but Demon.

Immediately Lord Vishnu cut off his head with Sudarshan chakra and his body was made into two pieces head and tail. The head is Rahu, a Dragon head and the tail is Ketu, a dragon tail. Since then Rahu and Ketu have been called  Shadow planets, and there is no existence of physical body. The Rahu and Ketu are enemies of Lord Sun and Moon causing Solar eclipses or Lunar eclipse giving negative effects. The north node is called Rahu and the South node is called Ketu.

Remedies to overcome the negative effects of Rahu are worshipping  Lord Shiva, and Lord Hanuman, offering water to Peeple Tree, worshiping Jupiter, worshiping of coconut tree, offering bananas to Lord Hanuman on Saturday, worshiping Maa Durga, donating black Urad Dal and coconuts are important. The color is black or blue, while Ketu is brown. In Das Mahavidyas worshipping of Chinnamastha will overcome the negative effects of Rahu.

Rahu is the minister of asuras one of Navagrahas, a shadow planet. He was born to Viprachitta and  Simhika. The  Simhika is sister of bhakta Prahlada. Rahu was born on Bhadrapada Krishna paksha Chaturdashi known as Rahu Jayanti. Rahu and Ketu are the results of our deeds and desires from previous birth to this birth.

In Hindu astrology Rahu and Ketu are considered as malefic Planets. The Rahu rules over Ardha, Swathi, and Shatabhisha nakshatra having a strong influence in astrology which is the 8th planet in the solar system. Rahu is a king of meteos, (a firebrand) and celestial body. The enemies of Rahu are the Sun, Moon, and Mars. The Rahu and Ketu are 7 and 7 to each other in the astrological Chart called samasapthami. The Rahu is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio. Rahu gets strong in 3rd,  6th, and 11th houses. Rahu gives results like Saturn. Rahu has no sign of its own, so it impacts the lord of any house that it inhabits.  Therefore regular worship of Chinnamastha devi curtails negative effects.
