Guru Purnima is also called Vyas Purnima celebrating the birth of Krishna Davaipayana better known as Ved Vyas Rushi. His birth was typical and related to the legendary epic Mahabharat. He was born to famous Astrologer Sage Parashura and mother Satyavathi, a fisherwoman in Damauli village located in Nepal.

Ved Vyas Maharshi taught four Vedas to his disciples namely Rigveda to Paila Rushi, Yajur Veda to Vaishampayana Rushi, Samaveda to Jamini Rushi, and Atharvaveda to Samanth Rushi on Ashada Shukla Purnima. Since then, it is called Ved Vyas Purnima as he divided four Vedas among his disciples.
