Five years of Hindu Festivals

Panchang is the main basis of Hindu festivals. It consists of Day, Tithi, Nakshtra, Yog & Karan. Based on this auspicious and inauspicious ceremonies are performed. There are several festivals followed by Hindus throughout the year. The most important festivals with dates are mentioned from 2022 to 2026.

Pongal:

Pongal is a Hindu festival that occurs in the month of January. It is a Four-day festival but celebrated for three days in some parts of India. First day is Bhogi Pongal or Lohri in Punjab. Bonfire is arranged and people enjoy flok dances. It is last day of Dhanurmasam and Godha Kalyanam is performed with Sriranganatha Swamy.

Makar Sankranti:

It is the second day of Pongal. When sun transit from Saggitarius (Dhanurasi) to Capricorn (Makar Rasi) is Makar Sankranti. It is also the worship of Lord Surya Narayan. Surya Atharvasirsham and Aditya Hrudayam are recited by devotees. It is the festival of kites.

Kari Pongal/Kanuma:

It is the third-day festival celebrated by farmers. Being a Harvest festival, Bullocks are decorated and taken for the procession. In the olden days, Bullock and Cock races are held. Urad dal Vada is an important dish.

Vasantha Panchami:

Magha Shukla Panchami is Vasantha Panchami and Sri Panchami. Matha Saraswati and Lakshmi Devi are worshipped. It is a Saraswati Jayanti. In some regions, it is called Basant Panchami. Saraswati Pooja is performed by children for good education and she is also Goddess of Music.

Shiva Ratri:

Magha Krishna Paksha Trayodasi with Chaturdasi is Shivratri and Jayanthi of Lord Siva. It is also Tantrik Ratri and auspicious to perform Tantrik sadhana. Rudrabishekam and Lingarchana are performed. It is a day of Hari Hara bhet means Vishnu and Shiva meet-each other. On this day Vishnu is offered with Bhel Leaves and Lord Shiva with Basil leaves at 12.00 A.M.

Holi:

Phalguna Shukla Purnima is celebrated as Holi. It is also calked as Dhulivandan, Holikadhan. A night before Holi huge Holika bonfire is burnt. It is a festival of colors. It is also Tantric ratri and auspicious to perform Tantra Sadhana.

Ugadi:

The Hindu year starts from Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. It is a new year in some parts of India. It is a National festival. It starts with Chaitra month and Navaratri is observed and celebrated. During this Navaratri Lord Srirama performed Tara sadhana which is second dasa Mahavidya. Since then he was named Tarakaram.

Srirama Navami:

Chaitra Shukla Navami is celebrated as Srirama Jayanthi. Lord Srirama is son of Ayodhya King Dasarath and Kausalya Devi. Maharshi Vashisht is the Lineage Guru of Lord Rama. He learned arrow skills from Rushi Vishwamitra since then he is called Kondanda Ram. Lord Rama Married to Sita Matha and having two sons Lav and Kush.

Hanuman Jayanti:

Chaitra Shukla Purnima is Hanuman Jayanti. Lord Hanuman is the son of Vayu and Matha Anjanadevi. He is the disciple of Lord Surya and ardent Bhakt of Lord Srirama. He is called Rambhakt and Ramdhut. Hanuman Chalisa is recited on this day. Devotees will take Hanuman Deeksha for forty days.

Akshay Tritiya:

Vaishaka Shukla Tritiya is celebrated as Akshya Tritya. It is the beginning of Treythayug. Performing Akshya Patra Sadhana is important. Devotees purchase gold, donate Pots, offer meals to Brahmins, pitru tarpan, and distribution of Mangoes is auspicious on this day.

Narasimha Jayanti:

Vishnu evoluted from the pillar and Killed the demon Hiryankashap. It is celebrated as NARASIMHA Jayanti. Devotees undertake fast for Nine days. He is Kuladevatha to some regions. Narasimha Puran is recited. Lord Vishnu after performing Chinnamasta sadhana incarnated as Lord Narasimha Swamy.

Jyestha Purnima :

Jyestha month is auspicious for celebrations including marriage. To maintain a healthy marital relationship Vata Savitri vrat is followed by women. Vata means Banyan tree. Women worship the Banyan Tree with water and tie thread to it. Sati Savitri performed this Vrat and Devotees follow to honor her.

Gurupurnima:

Ashada Shukla Paksha Purnima is Guru Purnima and named in memory of Ved Vyas Rushi. It is also called Vyas Poornima. GURU and Teachers are worshipped and honored on this occasion.

Sri Krishna Janmasthami:

It is celebrated on Shravan/Bhadrapada Krishna Asthami as Sri Krishna Jayanthi and Janmashtami. When Rohini Nakshatra and Krishna Ashtami fall on the same day is Krishna Jayanthi. If it is only Krishna Paksha Asthami is Janmasthami. Rohini Nakshatra is observed by Vaishnav culture and Asthami Tithi by all Devotees.

Ganesh Chaturthi:

Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Chaturthi is Ganesh Jayanti and he is the son of Parvathi matha. It is also Ganesh Navaratri. He is worshiped as Vishwaksen in Vaishnav Culture. Ganapathi pooja is performed on Chaturthi both in Shukla and Krishna Paksha in a month.

Mahalaya Paksha:

Amavasya for a period of fifteen days. It is also called Mahalaya and Shraddha Divas. Pitru Tarpan, Pitru Shraddha is performed for forefathers and all demise persons of maternal and paternal members for their blessings. During this period Pitru Dosha Nivarana sadhana is also performed.

Dasara/ Vijaya Dasami:

Ashwin Shukla Pratipada to Navami is Durga Navaratri and Dasami is Celebrated by Hindus as Dussera. It is a National festival. Shami tree, Ayudha pooja is also performed. Aparajita Devi is worshipped.

Diwali:

Ashwin Krishna Amavasya is celebrated as Diwali. It is six days festival from Ashwin Krishna Dwadasi to Kartik Shukla divitiya. It is occasioned on the success of killing demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna with help of Satyabhama. It is a festival of lights celebrated across the World.

Datta Jayanti:

Anasuya Mata and incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Moon, Durvasa Maharshi are brothers and Madhumati is sister. Dattatreya is also called Anagha Swamy and his wife is Anagha Lakshmi with eight sons as Ashtamaha Siddhi. He is Guru of Nath culture, Kartyaveerajuna, and Lord Parushuram.
